Farm-Restricted Class 1 Driver’s Licence

Drive to and from Your Farm with Ease

Starting April 1, 2024, eligible farmers and their family members can apply for a farm-restricted Class 1 driver’s licence. This specialized licence allows farmers to manage their agricultural transport needs efficiently, without the requirement for pre-licensing training.

Requirements and Details

To obtain a farm-restricted Class 1 driver’s licence, applicants must:

  • Successfully pass a Class 1 knowledge test and road test

  • Complete a vision screening

  • Submit a valid driver’s medical assessment

Upon meeting these requirements, the licence will be issued with a condition code “P,” signifying the specific farming restrictions. Additionally, applicants must fulfill all other Class 1 licence requirements, including the Air Brake (Q) endorsement. For more details, refer to the Air Brake Program.

Please note, farm-restricted Class 1 licences may also include the restriction code “N,” which prohibits operating vehicles that require a Class 2 or Class 4 licence unless the holder has completed the necessary tests and conditions for those classes.

For further details, refer to the Registrar’s Exemption for Farm-Restricted Class 1 Driver’s Licence.

Eligibility Criteria

A person qualifies as a farmer if they:

  • Are actively and directly involved in farming activities within Alberta

  • Are responsible for management decisions and operational costs

  • Hold control of farming assets, either through ownership or a rental agreement

  • Produce annual farm commodities valued at a minimum of $10,000 or between $5,000 and $9,999, with Canada Pension Plan or Old Age Security as the only other significant sources of income

This streamlined process supports Alberta's farming community, ensuring that essential transportation is accessible for farm operations.
